Even if there’s no expiration date, it won’t last forever. They may occasionally need recharging, however, especially after you discharge them. Manufacturers say most extinguishers should work for 5 to 15 years.
Recharging and Disposing of Extinguishers
▪ Check your extinguisher to make sure that it can be recharged–some extinguishers are single use only–and then call the office number for your Service Company. If the Service Company does not have the facilities to recharge your extinguisher, they will be able to direct you to a local business that can provide this service.
▪ If your extinguisher is a single use model, you must dispose of it properly. This means you cannot put it in your household trash or drop it in a local dumpster. The materials that fire extinguishers are made of, combined with the chemicals inside, qualify old extinguishers as hazardous waste. To dispose of an old or empty extinguisher, please looking your local Recycling Centre. They will be able to instruct you as to where to take your extinguisher or where and when you can place it for pickup by the department.
Replace or service an extinguisher right away if it’s been used or if you notice any of the following:
- The hose or nozzle is cracked, ripped, or blocked with debris.
- The locking pin on the handle is missing or unsealed.
- The handle is wobbly or broken.
- The inspection sticker or hang tag, with a record of checkups and maintenance, is missing.
